Subject Centric Light is not something new. It was how I learned to light back ‘in the day’. We would choose light based on how it is reflected back to the camera. Those reflections, whether they be bright or dull or diffused, are what we see – and how we see them is what we control as photographers. And since light does the same thing every time, we can determine how to light as being a process.

I should point out that this may not be a book for the absolute beginner. I do not discuss DSLR’s, how to change lenses, what stands look like or have photographs of umbrellas. I take for granted you know you know how to use your camera.

We do discuss exposure, ISO’s, apertures and shutterspeeds – but we do it in a way that is in keeping with understanding Subject Centic Lighting. If you have just started photography, and know how to work your camera and where to put the batteries in your flash, this book will help your lighting in a big way. Understanding why light does what it does, and what light does when the subject reflects it, will make your thinking on lighting much more clear.

Lighting Essentials: A Subject Centric Approach to Lighting for Digital Photographers

I hope you enjoy this book, and it helps you to understand and create better light. Creative and controlled light. Your light.

This comprehensive guide covers such topics as the benefits and drawbacks of various lighting tools, the effect of light placement, and controlling lighting ratios.

Designed for intermediate-to-advanced photographers, it illustrates techniques for using light as a tool to capture the subject in the best possible manner.
